SCHEELS Partners with I Run 4

Race season is upon us, and one nonprofit is making sure every person has the chance to partake.

SCHEELS is partnering with I Run 4, Inc., a nonprofit that pairs racers with people with disabilities who want to participate in running events.

I Run 4 was founded in 2013 by one of our very own – SCHEELS Associate Tim Boyle. Over the past four years, the organization has paired more than 20,000 racers with “buddies”.  During a race, the “buddies” are pushed in a special running wheelchair to enjoy the sense and camaraderie of a race.  Not only does this organization emphasize the opportunity to allow people with disabilities a chance to race, it encourages racers to build a relationship with their running buddies so they can enjoy multiple races together. Many racers and racing buddies have built longstanding friendships as a result.

Over the course of 2017, we will follow Founder Tim Boyle has he completes five races with his buddies across the country.

Read more about each race and buddy below, and find more about the organization here: http://www.whoirun4.com/

Meet Zachary Johnson

During the Kansas City Marathon, SCHEELS will sponsor racer and IRun4 founder Tim Boyle and his racing buddy, Zachary Johnson as they race in the Waddell & Reed Half Marathon.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about you – where are you from, what are your favorite things to do, etc.
A: My name is Zachary Johnson. I am 3 ½ years old. I am from Kansas City, Missouri. I have Down syndrome and am nonverbal but that doesn’t stop me from getting my point across! My favorite things to do are singing, dancing, watching movies (and acting out every character’s part), watching videos on YouTube, playing games on my iPad, going for walks in my stroller and swinging. I try to sleep as little as possible.

Q: How did you get introduced to “Who Do U Run 4?”
A: I have a friend who also has Down syndrome and she has a running buddy through iRun4. Mommy checked it out and thought it sounded really awesome, so she signed me up. I had my running buddy Ginna Murphy-Christiansen the next day, and I love her! She has even come to Kansas City so our families could meet, and we had the best time! We even went ice skating together!

Q: Is this your first race, either with “I Run 4” or in general?
A: This is my first race ever! I am super excited. I love when mommy and daddy push me fast in my stroller. Mommy is nervous I will be ornery. I have no idea why she would worry about such a thing… 😉

Q: What are you most excited for in regards to racing?
A: I love to go fast! When mommy and daddy take me for walks, I always sign for them to run and pout when they quit to catch their breath. I am a sensory seeker and part of that is I crave that sensation of going fast!
Q: Do you think Tim will run fast? 😉
I think Mr. Tim will run super duper fast! (Especially compared to my mommy and daddy!)

The public is encouraged to cheer on all racers this Saturday beginning at 7:15am. For more race information, please visit http://www.sportkc.org/marathon/
