Running Your First 5K

“If you are like me, then at some point you thought about running a race and never did it or thought you just couldn’t do it. I am here to tell you, no matter the race, you can!

Competing in a race was not something I thought I would do but once I ran a few, it became part of who I am, a competitive distance runner. I love to run and one of the reasons I love to run is because I have been lucky enough to have some success. Let’s talk about getting you out for your first run and see if you have some fun with it and get the bug, like I did!”

You Need A Plan

First things first, you need a plan. You can easily search for the right plan given your fitness level. Whether it be a couch to 5k or completing your first marathon, make sure you are ready to take on this challenge by following a few simple tips!

Start out by being realistic about what you want to accomplish. Your fitness level might best be evaluated by your doctor, but your drive is what is going to take you across the finish line of any race you take on.

Give Yourself Time

Give yourself enough time to prepare. If you have never tried to run and want to take on a 5k race in a week, you might consider dialing back a notch and giving yourself the time needed to be successful. Trust in the plan you have and stick to it!

Find A Running Partner

This can be one of the most impactful things you can do for your running success. Having someone to help you through the trials and tribulations of a running program is a must for many. The mutual accountability required with a running partner is awesome!

Listen To Your Body

Don’t be afraid to walk a little. The goal is to finish, not win. Finding success in completing your first race will help you want to run another one.

Enjoy Yourself

Last, but certainly not least, enjoy! If you are new to running, this can seem hard to do but slow down and enjoy the scenery. Smell the proverbial flowers, relax and run!
